A History of Trichology
The Institute of Trichologists was founded in the UK by a group of hair
professional and medical doctors 102 years ago. The Trichology study program
was subsequently formatted and predominately involves intensive study of chemistry,
biology, anatomy and physics.
Trichology was taken from the Greek word "tricho" that means quite simply "hair".
Trichology is a paramedical field as trichologists may liaise
with medical practitioners and other health professionals when a particular hair
problem is maybe a symptom of an underlying medical problem. Trichologists are
trained to spot when an underlying medical condition could be present through
the diagnosis of varying forms of hair loss and can recommend specific blood tests
accordingly.
The Institute remains highly regarded as the UK's examining body for all trainee
trichologists and governing body of all qualified Trichologists. Trichologists
trained and registered by the Institute are recognised by the initials A.I.T after
qualifying initially and M.I.T after working appropriately as a clinical
trichologist for at least three years. All qualified trichologists adhere to
professional ethics as laid out by the Institute.
It is recommended that all sufferers of hair loss, baldness, psoriasis or itchy
problematic scalp conditions have a consultation with a fully trained trichologist
consultant who is Institute registered. This means a consultant who has been fully
trained with The Institute of Trichologists.
