Hair Loss Treatments
Depending on your particular type of hair loss or scalp problem the best treatment will be recommended to you during your trichological
examination and consultation at The Hair Clinic. The Hair Clinic treatments fall under two categories, these being Trichological treatments
and Prescription products. Prescription products are pharmaceutically prepared and the trichological treatments are trichologically prepared
and therefore made to treat the exact hair loss or scalp problem diagnosed. Trichological treatments are prepared to our exact specification
by a trichological laboratory.
Trichological products
Trichological products are formulated to treat specific hair loss (such as alopecia) and scalp problems (such as psoriasis). Natural plant based
ingredients are used depending on the hair or scalp problem, each individual ingredient used has its own special effect on the scalp and hair.
These ingredients are mixed to requirement within the following:
- Trichological Shampoo
- Trichological Scalp Cream
- Trichological Topical Solution
- Trichological Hair Loss Serum
These are not mass produced but are individually prepared to cope with varying hair and scalp conditions; these are dispensed under trichological
supervision following consultation and examination. Suitable for men and women.
Prescription products
Current medically approved treatments for hair loss are:
Minoxidil
It is suspected that minoxidil prevents hair from being shed from the scalp as it seems to prolong the active growth phase of the hair follicles,
therefore halting hair loss. Minoxidil can be mixed with additives that can also help to counteract or block the effects of the male hormone
dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at hair follicle level. DHT directly attacks hair follicles in the genetically predisposed therefore this treatment
really manages to get at the cause of hair loss. Minoxidil plus additives can be used alone or alongside an orally prescribed drug call Propecia.
The aim of Minoxidil plus additives is to stabilise hair loss, strengthen existing hair growth and aid hair re-growth. Suitable for men and women.
Propecia
Propecia acts by lowering the levels of DHT in the system, leading to lower amounts of DHT being free to attack hair follicles. The active part of
Propecia is a drug called finasteride-an anti-androgen. It is taken once a day by mouth. Both additive based minoxidil and Propecia are medically
prescribed, before administration extent of hair loss and health and life style factors are discussed to determine the best treatment regime for
the individual concerned. The aim of Propecia is to stabilise hair loss, strengthen existing hair growth and aid hair re-growth. Suitable only for
men.
