Can Vitamins Help With Hair Regrowth?

Men and women who suffer from hair loss are likely to research many different ways to prevent, or at least slow down, their locks falling out – from trying to make their lives less stressful to avoiding damaging hair too much by over-styling.


Something that lots of people might consider as well is taking vitamins, as refuelling your body with nutrients could be the answer to fixing your hair loss problem.

- Zinc

Zinc tends to be in many hair growth vitamins, which are designed to boost the production of healthy looking hair. This is because zinc encourages the synthesis of proteins and helps vitamins to absorb into the body.


When taken with B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12, iron and vitamins A, C and D, this could make a difference to your hair growth over time.


- Biotin

Another ingredient to look out for is biotin, which the Mirror describes as “superfood for strong hair”. This is because the mineral helps to stimulate the production of keratin, which is needed for hair growth.


As well as keratin, it encourages the production of amino acids, which provide hair with the proteins it needs to be strong and resilient to breaking.


- Selenium

Whether you take tablets with selenium in or you stock up on brazil nuts, which are a great source of the mineral, you could find it helps boost hair growth.


According to Medical News Today, selenium is incredibly useful at helping to produce hair, referencing a study by Nuzanna Sabina Goluch-Koniuszy.


The report, which was published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information, stated it was an “essential component” in hair growth, saying: “Hair receives trace elements mostly from the blood and is able to uptake selenium in its matrix during keratinization. Selenium is a component of at least 35 proteins many of which are enzymes and with its deficiency in the body hair loss with pseudo albinism occurs. Although much less common than selenium deficiency, selenium toxicity can affect individuals as a result of over supplementation, which results in hair loss.”


It recommended eating bread and cereals, meat, liver, fish, eggs, and dairy products to boost selenium levels.


However, it is important not to consume too much, as this can conversely result in hair loss, as well as nausea, skin rashes and problems with the nervous system.


- Does it really work?

While there is no harm in taking these vitamins to try and boost hair growth or improve the strength of your tresses, those suffering from a serious case of trichology, whether because of alopecia, cancer treatment or hormonal changes, are unlikely to find a magical solution with these supplements.


If you struggle with baldness and have not found minerals or vitamins make a significant difference, it is worth considering a hair transplant for a permanent solution.


By replanting hair from elsewhere on the body on to the scalp, patients are likely to see the density of their hair improve within six to eight months.
